Summer School on Misinformation, Disinformation and Hate Speech - Hybrid Format: Rome (Italy) and online
Mon, 26 Jan 2026 03:32:37 +0000
Technological advancements are revolutionising how people connect, communicate, and access information, creating unprecedented opportunities for sharing knowledge and fostering cooperation and advancements in all human disciplines. However, these same innovations have enabled the rapid spread of misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech, posing significant risks to the integrity of the information ecosystem. Safeguarding this integrity is essential to protecting human rights, peace and security, and a sustainable future.
The international community continues to grapple with the geopolitical and societal challenges posed by these phenomena. Misinformation and disinformation increase vulnerability and amplify risks, while hate speech undermines dignity and safety, often inciting violence and creating societal instability. Recognising the severity of these issues, the UN General Assembly has called for international cooperation to counter their spread, as reflected in the Secretary-General’s 2022 report on disinformation and the 2021 resolution establishing the International Day for Countering Hate Speech.
In June 2024, the UN published its Global Principles for Information Integrity, which addresses these challenges by promoting transparency, accountability, and collaboration among governments, tech companies, civil society, and individuals. These guidelines aim to combat harmful narratives, protect human rights, and foster trust by creating a secure and inclusive digital space.
The 4th edition of the Summer School on Misinformation, Disinformation, and Hate Speech will be delivered in a hybrid format from 6 to 10 July 2026 by UNICRI and the Italian Society for International Organisation (SIOI).
The Summer School will provide participants with a fundamental understanding of the various dimensions of disinformation, hate speech, and fake news, including the role of social media in war and political propaganda campaigns. The existing international legal and policy frameworks will be examined to improve participants’ ability to address the issue comprehensively and promote their role as advocates for an effective change in public policies, strategies, and practices. More specifically, the curriculum includes the following topics:
- The difference between disinformation and misinformation and the different types of disinformation and misinformation.
- The difference between hate speech and freedom of expression.
- An overview of the international legal framework and human rights standards used to counter hate speech and disinformation.
- The role of fake news in fuelling hate speech and the link between fake news, misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech.
- The role of social media hate speech and disinformation in war and political propaganda campaigns.
- The role of AI in disinformation.
- Disinformation: techniques and strategies. Tools to detect and debunk disinformation.
- Tools to monitor and respond to misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech – including the role of media.
- Proposing a counternarrative to hate speech – Debunking as a method of uncovering hate speech, disinformation, misinformation, and fake news.
The Summer School offers professional, legal, social, scientific, and academic perspectives through theoretical lectures, group discussions, dynamic case studies, individual readings, and practical exercises. The faculty is composed of expert scholars and academics from leading universities, representatives of the United Nations system, international human rights bodies, and the civil society.

MEAL in Action (2026)
Adaptive MEAL when plans meet realitySelf-Study Certificate Course
Start: Immediate Access
Time: Approximately 3 hours to complete
You designed a good system. Indicators were clear. Baseline was done. Data collection was planned. Then six months in, attendance collapsed in half your sites. The data looked suspicious. Community leaders showed up with complaints. The donor emailed asking why you're behind target. Most MEAL training ends at the plan. This one starts where they stop—when implementation gets messy. Without adaptive MEAL skills, you face:
- Monitoring data that shows problems but no framework for deciding what to do
- Suspicious numbers you report anyway because you don't know how to validate them
- Overall averages that hide the fact some groups are being left behind
- Cultural tensions or unintended effects that weren't in your theory of change
- End-of-project reports that explain what happened but not what you learned
This course puts you in the role of MEAL Manager for a women's economic empowerment program. Over 24 months of simulated program time, you'll face the decisions that define effective MEAL practice—and learn frameworks you can apply immediately. No abstract theory. Real decisions with real consequences. After this course, you'll confidently:
- Design sampling strategies that reveal patterns instead of hiding them in averages
- Decide "adapt now" versus "investigate first" using a clear adaptive management framework
- Triangulate suspicious data before it undermines your credibility
- Use disaggregation to show who is benefiting and who is being left behind
- Capture unintended consequences—positive and negative—that fall outside your logframe
- Communicate disappointing results to donors as learning, not failure
This self-paced course combines video lessons with comprehensive reference materials:
- Video lessons following a realistic 24-month case study simulation
- 40-page Participant Handbook — complete course transcript for reference
- 5 Field Note PDFs — printable guides on sampling, adaptive management, triangulation, disaggregation, and unintended consequences
- 15-question knowledge assessment
- Reflection and action planning tool
- Certificate upon completion
- MEAL/M&E officers and managers in NGOs or humanitarian programs
- Program staff who handle reporting and donor relations
- Anyone who's built a MEAL plan but struggles when reality deviates
- Practitioners ready to move beyond basic indicators to adaptive, evidence-based decision-making
Prerequisites: Basic understanding of MEAL concepts (outcomes, outputs, indicators, baselines) and some exposure to program implementation. New to MEAL? Start with Planning for MEAL first.

MEAL Planning in Practice (2026)
Fri, 23 Jan 2026 16:22:23 +0000
MEAL Planning in Practice (2026)
Practical MEAL systems for small NGOs without dedicated M&E staffSelf-Study Certificate Course
Start: Immediate Access
Time: Typically around 3 hours to complete
You've been handed MEAL responsibilities but no one showed you how to actually do it. You know you need to track progress and prove impact, but the frameworks feel complicated and the jargon doesn't help. Most MEAL training assumes you have a dedicated M&E team and months to design systems. For smaller NGOs, that's not reality. Without a workable MEAL system, organizations face:
- Donors asking for evidence of impact you can't provide
- Data collection that buries your team without informing decisions
- No clear way to know if you're reaching the most vulnerable
- Missed opportunities to adapt when something isn't working
- End-of-project reports scrambled together from incomplete records
This practical training gives you a simple, working MEAL system you can build this week. You'll follow a program officer's journey as she builds her MEAL plan from scratch, facing the same questions you do: Are we reaching the most vulnerable? Are we creating real change? How do I prove impact to the donor? No complex frameworks designed for large agencies. Just what works when resources are limited and you need something functional. Through this training, you'll be able to:
- Build a MEAL Framework Table for any project using a 9-column planning structure
- Design indicators that measure both reach and quality
- Set realistic targets based on context, not wishful thinking
- Run monthly learning meetings that turn data into decisions
- Explain your MEAL system to donors with confidence
This self-paced course combines video lessons with practical tools you can use immediately:
- Video presentations following a realistic case study
- The MEAL Framework Table — a 9-column planning tool covering what to measure, how to calculate it, where data comes from, who collects it, and who gets informed
- The Monthly Learning Meeting template — a 4-part agenda that turns data into decisions
- The MEAL Plan Quality Checklist — a review tool to check your plan before you finalize it
- Knowledge check to test your understanding
- Certificate upon completion

Sustainable solar water scheme design in humanitarian and development contexts
Fri, 23 Jan 2026 00:05:11 +0000
Introduction
The aim of this course, which is co-organised by ICRC and the University of Neuchâtel, is to train qualified and motivated engineers and scientists who are active (or intending to become active) in the Energy-Environment or WASH-sector in humanitarian and development contexts in the booming field of solarisation of water supply systems. The participants should be able, at the end of the course, to plan, design, implement and assess cost-effectiveness of solar water supply systems in the context of humanitarian and development operations.
The training covers a wide range of technical and economic aspects required to implement sustainable solar water schemes aiming towards development. Solarisation of water schemes is currently booming worldwide, with climate-resilient solutions high on the strategic agenda of INGOS, UN agencies, donors and governments. Technical know-how on specificities of water-scheme solarisation have so far not been consistently integrated in academic curricula of engineers and scientists active in the WASH sector, which is why such dedicated trainings are of prime importance. The specificities of this training are both the integration of borehole dynamic processes into the design of solar water schemes as well as the hands-on mounting of a full solar water scheme in the field.

This specialization examines the role of national and international courts and tribunals in contributing to the settlement of disputes. Participants will examine the role of international law in the settlement of disputes in a wide array of fields such as human rights, armed conflicts, territorial and maritime border issues, environment and climate change, multilateral trade, investments, amongst others and will learn not only the traditional legal processes employed in international and transnational adjudication, but also the alternative forms of dispute settlement prevalent in international law.
Participants will have the opportunity to complete the program within a six-month period, between September and March.
